  Provost’s Award for Ethical Leadership and Community Engagement

  Michael Camal credits his path to advocacy work with the start he had at the University of Rhode Island, where he received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and leadership studies in 2018. He currently works as a senior manager for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Countering Human Trafficking. Camal’s heart for service and passion for his work led him to be selected as a finalist for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal—the “Oscars” of government service—in 2023 for his work raising awareness for human trafficking in the aviation industry.

  His dedication to human trafficking awareness training has contributed to better-informed staff, safer airports, and greater awareness among the traveling public, and he has been recognized by airline industry colleagues for his energy and work as a dedicated coalition builder.

  Graduating with his bachelor’s degree from the health studies program in 2014, Craig Snow went on to receive his Master of Healthcare Administration from Salve Regina University. It was during this time that he began working with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Research Program and helped develop a supportive care web-based portal for patients and survivors. Today, Snow acts as the associate director of cohort studies operations in breast oncology where he continues to develop his career advancing breast cancer research.

  Akos Antwi is a co-founder of Revive Therapeutic Services and a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She earned her bachelor’s in nursing from URI in 2014 and later pursued her master’s in nursing and certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Walden University. Her compassionate approach, combined with her clinical expertise, has helped countless individuals overcome their mental health challenges and achieve their full potential. As a co-founders of Revive Therapeutic Services, Antwi has helped to establish the organization as a leading provider of behavioral health services in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Her dedication to providing exceptional care to those struggling with mental health and behavioral issues is unmatched, and her contributions to the field have made a lasting impact on the lives of her clients.

  Stephen Siravo ’13

  Stephen Siravo received his bachelor’s in accounting from URI in 2013 and went on to earn his master’s from Northeastern University. Siravo has worked on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol team at the World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental think tank based in Washington, DC. He now advises companies measuring their environmental impact, setting science-based reduction targets and developing decarbonization strategies as a Senior Manager at Deloitte LLP. He is also deeply committed to his advocacy work serving people with epilepsy through The Matty Fund—founded by his family in honor of his youngest brother—and is also the treasurer on the board of the Epilepsy Foundation of New England.

  Callie Veelenturf is today’s leading voice for nature at the intersection of field science and national and international policy. She works with communities all over the globe, leading and empowering public citizens and scientists to use their voices to advocate for change.

  Veelenturf founded and currently leads the nonprofit research and conservation organization, The Leatherback Project, where she works for the conservation of leatherback sea turtles and other threatened marine species. She is traveling all over the world connecting indigenous and marginalized communities with government agencies to propose and achieve paramount environmental advancements in the global recognition of the intrinsic rights of nature. She earned her bachelor’s in marine biology and wildlife conservation biology from URI in 2014 and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Central Florida.

  Shawn Antoine II is a filmmaker hailing from Harlem, NY, with an innate passion for storytelling. After playing football at URI and graduating with a degree in public relations in 2019, his call to filmmaking began with the success of his short film, SHOWTIME, which was acquired by Magic Johnson’s ASPIRE TV.

  Antoine has acted as one of the youngest directors of admissions in the country for his other alma mater, Cardinal Hayes High School. And today, he is pursuing his Master of Fine Arts at Northwestern University and acts as an assist to producers and directors on notable projects from HBO Max, NBC, Netflix, and many more.

  Cara Nunez is a well decorated assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University, but her roots started here at URI. As a 2016 graduate of the International Engineering Program, Nunez has dual bachelor’s degrees in biomedical engineering and Spanish. Her research interests include robotics, haptics, and human-centered design for human-machine interaction, medical applications, augmented and virtual reality, and STEM education, among others.

  Her awards include the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Stanford Centennial Teaching Assistant Award, and the Stanford Community Impact Award. Outside of her work she continues to stay connected to URI as an advisory board member for the biomedical engineering program.

  Matthew Talbot is passionate about the profession of pharmacy and shows his dedication every day while owning and operating Aroostook Apothecary, his family’s fifth generation independent pharmacy. Talbot graduated from URI in 2014 summa cum laude from the Doctor of Pharmacy program. He was an active participant in the National Community Pharmacists Association and a member of the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity and Rho Chi honor society.

  He received the National Community Pharmacists Association leadership award during his time at the College of Pharmacy, which he uses daily to manage, collaborate, and ensure excellence. In his spare time he manages his local ice hockey league, golfs, and spends time with his wife, two kids, and his berne doodle.

  Feinstein College of Education

  Kelsea Adams graduated from URI with a bachelors in elementary education and biology as well as a master’s in special education. Adams currently teaches elementary education and special education for the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District in California where she won the best teacher of the year award in 2022.

  Her commitment as an educator is displayed inside her classroom and out in the community where she ensures all her students are exposed to equitable opportunities and new experiences. In her classroom, she aims to instill a love and passion for community service and even exposes her students to a version of her own marine science education, hoping they will develop their own appreciation for the environment.

  An accomplished Rhody athlete, Lucy Moyes spent her time at URI as the captain of the varsity women’s rowing team and an Atlantic 10 champion many times over, all while earning her degree in supply chain management. After graduating in 2018 Moyes went on to earn her M.B.A. from URI in 2020 and currently works at CVS Health as a supply chain project manager. Her love of the open water has never left her, and she continues her rowing legacy as a member of the masters rowing team at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence.
